Tuesday Spread Option

1.What are your reactions to the Super Bowl including ads and the halftime show?

Zach-

The game was pretty good. It was exciting to see the Ravens score a lot of points in the first half. And just when the blowout got boring, the 49ers came back and scored a lot of points.  We see a lot of things in the Super Bowl you won't see in any other games.  Last year, the Patriots let the Giants score they last touchdown of the game to try and gain an advantage. This year, we saw an intentional safety to try and burn time off the clock.  You just won't see that in the regular season.  The Super Bowl may not always feature the most exciting match-ups, but the games always seem to end up pretty exciting anyway.  The ads were awful.  Even the e-Trade one I mentioned last week was dreadful. Nothing was funny, one or two were inspiring, and all were forgettable. I did like the Leon Sandcastle one, but other than that....yawn. The halftime show was great! Best I've seen in years. The lighting and special effects were beyond sweet and Beyonce was great. I don't know why so many people are hating on her. Destiny's Child reunion, people! Did you not watch?!

Spencer-

To be honest the first half and early second half had me feeling like I was watching a rerun of the college national championship game.  Then after the power outage I was thrilled to see the 49ers make a run and game out of it.   I thought that no call on 4th down was questionable and that upset me a little but the 49ers had awful execution and play calling on all those plays so in retrospect they didn't deserve to punch it in.  They were literally ripping apart the Ravens defense all second half and then they got within 10 yard and looked like they didn't even understand how to spell offense.

Ads in my opinion were sub par.  There were some I enjoyed thought like the retirement home Taco Bell one and the Leon Sandcastle got me to laugh, but it was a dismal year for commercials. Beyonce was awesome at halftime though and I am still salty that Janet Jackson forced us to have mediocre halftime shows for a few years because clearly Beyonce killed it, her performance, and the electric capacity of the Super Dome.  Glad to have it back to normal though.

Ty-

The Super Bowl was all time great! But not because of the 49ers' near come back or Jacoby Jones' awesome touchdown dances! This was Beyonce's Super Bowl! Simply because she saved us from seeing 80 year old rock stars doing songs that half America didn't know. Oh and it was Beyonce..... so yeah she obviously won the Super Bowl.

Beyonce aside I think this game was obviously saved by the blackout in the 3rd quarter because the Ravens where going to blow the doors off of the game. But instead the Ravens offense, that was clicking on all cylinders, didn't touch the field for more than an hour! It made the game more fun to watch and all though their were some questionable calls at the end of the game I felt as if the Ravens deserved to win much more than the 49ers. The 49ers handled that goal line drive fairly poor and the pass to Crabtree might not have even been catchable.

The ads for the most part weren't very good. There were some funny ones like the retirement home taco bell one and the Doritos princess commercial. The other ads were either reruns, not funny, or creepy...... I'm looking at you 2 minute Ram commercial! But like I said in last weeks spread it's hard to be creative in today's world where every other movie is a remake.

2.The LA Clippers are talking about acquiring Kevin Garnett for Eric Bledsoe and Caron Butler, do you think this is a good or bad trade?

Zach-

I won't pretend like I know a ton about basketball but I don't see how this would work at all. I think that's a sweet deal for the Celtics whose season is near the point of no-return. This kind of trade would give them the much-needed help for Rondo. But why do the Clippers need an aging player like KG?  He doesn't seem like he would fit into team dynamic. Plus, Bledsoe is a sweet option off the bench. He has potential to be a starting PG in the league. Why not keep easy points while his contract is still fairly cheap? It's not like picking up KG is a long-term pickup. The man can't have that many seasons left.

Spencer-

In my opinion awful idea.  If the Clippers who are running LA right now are thinking future, and long term you don't trade for KG.  Period.  He's only got about 2 years left in him and the young Clippers already look like they have a bright fiture ahead with the squad they got.  They may have to make a trade at some point whether this year or next but It shouldn't be for Garnett.

Ty-

This makes absolutely no sense to me. I know KG still has a good amount left in the tank but I just don't see why the Clippers would think about making this move. Especially if they give away Bledsoe. They already have a power forward and arguably the best bench in the NBA, so i don't see where Garnett would fit in. Never mind the fact that no-one knows if KG would be open to coming off of the Bench for the first time in his career. It also doesn't make much sense for the Celtics, they already have too many guards and what would they do with Bledsoe when Rondo came back?

3.Now that the Super Bowl and football is over what other sports are focusing your attention on and why?

Zach-

I'm still not over the excitement that hockey is back, so there is that. Basketball in college and at the professional level are in full swing so I can watch that... Lets see... Lets see... Oh yeah. BASEBALL. Pitchers and catchers report in one week.  The true new year is right around the corner.  I don't have a ton of reasons other than I love baseball.  But there is one thing that I think needs more attention in the sport. The World Baseball Classic is this year too.  People have argued that the Classic is boring. I disagree. Its spring training, but with an actual competitive feel to it. I understand why coaches may not like it because players can get hurt. But to a fan, this should be an exciting time. International baseball has been on a down swing since it was removed from the Olympics.  I think the Classic is an opportunity to bring the sport back into over-seas popularity.

Spencer-

I'm turning my attention to the sport I've already been invested in since the NFL regular season ended...college hoops!  I absolutely love college basketball.  So suspenseful, every game matters for making the tourney, and fun to watch!  In retrospect conference tourney's start in about 3 weeks and that's when everyone jumps on board with me, and with the competition as close as it is this year really any team can win.  Can't wait for everyone to watch with me.  Oh and pitchers and catchers report next week!!!

Ty-

I know these guys are excited about Baseball coming back soon but there is no way I will worry about baseball until August or September. There are 162 games! I can't care about spring training. You hear they same argument about basketball and they only play 82 games. The sport that America will turn to is College Basketball because of the tournament and rightfully so. The NCAA tournament is probably the best event in sports behind the Super Bowl, but I wont just focus on college basketball more but the NBA too because the second half of the season, contrary to popular belief, is when teams truly begin to play hard and make a playoff push. Not to mention that the NBA all-star weekend is infinitely better than the pro bowl.

4. In college basketball many of the #1 ranked teams have fallen to upsets to the last couple of weeks. Do you think it's because there is more parity in college basketball or a lack of talent? Which team do you think is the best?

Zach-

It may seem like a cheap answer, but I think there is more parity... because of a lack of talent. There hasn't really been a stand-out prospect this year. No sure #1 pick.  This has forced a lot of schools to focus on team play and less on getting the ball to a certain player. And when you have teams who are really in-sync with each other, that is bound to cause some parity. Sometimes a team just has an off day.  That is exactly what you are seeing with these #1s who keep falling to determined teams who spread the ball around and play solid team defense.  I think the AP got it right today when they picked Indiana as the #1.  But as the week goes on, this could definitely change.

Spencer-

I think the reason several number 1 teams have fallen this year is due to the fact that the talent is spread all around this year.  There might not be an Anthony Davis this year but there are certainly players to pay attention to.  Zeller with Indiana, Burke on Michigan, and even Craft on OSU, and that's just to name a few.  Like I said in my last answer, the field is wide open, and I think there is no clear winner like last year where Kentucky dominated pretty much everyone Ll year.  Overall though, and call me biased if you must, I think Syracuse is the best team.  I think with the players they have along with Sourtherland when he isn't getting suspended, they could go the distance.  MCW is coming on strong at point, Triche is taking over games I think they have a solid team that can compete with the best of them.  The temple loss was a fluke, they didn't show up and their other 2 losses were in the Big East which is always the most competitive conference year in and year out in my humble opinion.  Their last year with several of these teams had proven no different.

Ty-

I think the chaos in college basketball has a lot to do with a lack of talent. There aren't any standout players like an Anthony Davis or Kevin Durant. That being said I think this is how college basketball has always been. Even in years where the talent pool is deep and ripe for the pickings the teams with these future superstars didn't always make it as far in the tournament except for Davis and Kentucky. But this is when college basketball is at it's best because we don't really know who will win, unlike last year when the preeminent favorite were the Kentucky Wildcats most of the year. I think Zeller makes Indiana the actual best team because he is probably the best player in the nation but Trey Burke is in the conversation as well as Michigan. Either way I can't wait until my tournament bracket is completely destroyed.
