Monday Spread Option

  1. The Superbowl matchup is set between the Ravens and the 49ers. What do you think is the best storyline? And is this the matchup you wanted to see?

Ty Doyle-

People will play on the Harbowl aspect since this is the first time Brothers coached against each other in a Superbowl. Which I understand has a lot of aspects to play up in the media. Sibling rivalry and how the friends and family will handle watching the game. But that’s an obvious storyline and I think it shouldn’t be important because those two brothers don’t go out on the field and play the game. Another likely overplayed storyline will be Ray Lewis’ chance to ride off into the sunset on top but he already has a Superbowl. They guy that is overlooked is Ed Reed who has been a Baltimore Raven since being drafted by them in 2002 and widely considered the best free safety of our generation. He has a chance to validate his illustrious career and there are no guarantees that he’ll be on the team next year.

Zach Warren-

It was hard not to be biased during the AFC championship game. I'm one of many, many people in America who did not want to see the Patriots in the Superbowl (again). I do think that the Ravens have the better story here when you consider the playoff history that they have had with New England. Partner that with the whole fact that this is going to be Ray Lewis' last game of what has been a historic career, you have to think that the Ravens have a lot to be proud of, and a lot to play for in two weeks. This isn't really the matchup I was expecting, or desired.  I really wanted an RGIII vs. Andrew Luck Super Bowl, but I will take this one.  I think it will be a decent game, and the two brother head coaches adds an interesting splash of drama.

Spencer German-

I think hands down the best storyline is Ray Lewis' run to finish his career with a shot at the Super Bowl.  I think Kaepernick's story coming from a not so dominant college, and winning the starting job that some people thought shouldn't be his would take first otherwise, but I think most people agree Ray Ray takes the cake.  We're talking about one of the most dominant defensive and arguably overall best players to ever play the game here.  A career loaded up with incredible defensive statistics. 2050 combined tackles for his career 41 and a half sacks, he has absolutely made himself a first ballot hall of famer no question.  He faced adversity several times, people hated him then grew to love him again as he "found God" I think if you're not pulling for him at this point and that story doesn't grab you're attention then you don't have a pulse.  That being said I did want a Patriots, 49ers matchup but for bias reasons.  Josh McDaniels and Greg Roman (the 2 teams offensive coordinators) are John Carroll Alums.  Gotta love some Blue Streaks representing my small D3 school in the big game! At least one gets a shot at it though.

  2. Tom Brady was 10 and 0 with 3 Superbowls at first and now he is 8-6 since and 0 and 2 in Superbowls since Spygate. What do you think is the reason for his recent woes?

Ty Doyle-

These numbers would tell you that maybe the man who has been the pure essence of clutch was actually choking in the playoffs of late. The thing that is overlooked is that Tom Brady the 3 time Superbowl champion was nowhere as good as the Tom Brady that we’ve seen since 2007. Those Patriots Superbowl teams won all three of those games by a combined 9 points. So those teams where as close to losing as they where to winning hence why they’ve lost 2 Superbowls in close games. That being said, the main reason he hasn’t won the Superbowl lately is simply that football is a team sport and the Patriots haven’t had a dominant defense or running game since their last title.

Zach Warren-

I think there are a couple of reasons for Brady's recent decline of playoff wins.  First and foremost, I think the majority of the league has raised the quality of football in the past few years.  Teams are better, and I wouldn't be surprised if some teams asked themselves, "can these guys beat the Patriots?" when it came to the building process. I'm not saying that this Patriots team isn't good, just that the rest of the league has gotten better and they don't quite match-up to that team that won 3 Super Bowls. Its possible that Brady has just been around too long and defenses have figured him out. Also, you have to think of something that ESPN will NEVER admit. Maybe... Brady isn't as good as he was a few years ago?!  The man ages just like the rest of us, I think its fair to assume that he might have peaked.  But don't get me wrong, Brady is still one of the top, if not the top, QBs in the league.  That is a testament to just how good he was a few years ago.  I wouldn't worry about him too much though. I could see him winning another ring, and soon. Just not this year. Bam.

Spencer German-

I don't think any of the blame for his record in recent history has anything to do with him.  Look at his numbers this season...4,827 yrds, 34 TD's and only 8 interceptions.  That's comparable to other seasons such as 07 where he threw for 4,806 yards, 50 TD's, and 8 interceptions (the year the Patriots went undefeated and lost to the Giants in the Super Bowl).  I think there is no question that he dominates the game on every level and has proven to exploit every team.  The problem though is that when he has seasons where he is that productive the Patriots have come up short.  Go back to the early part of the century and we see a more balanced team that had a strong defense.  Now Brady has to throw more.  They rely so much on him, respectfully so, that teams eventually find a way to shut down their very complex offense and when you take away their one dimension on offense they struggle.  Add that with defenses that haven't seen much success like those in the earlier years with Teddy Brushis and Ty Laws and they can't get the job done.  Football is a team effort, I think there is no question the Patriots wouldn't of even been close to the Super Bowl in recent years without Tom Brady, but he can't do it all alone.

  3. Hockey is back finally! Do you think a bunched up season like this is a bad idea? And who do you think is the favorite to win it all?.

Ty Doyle-

I must admit I thought that it was too late for hockey. The season was supposed to start in October and it took them until January to end it when the season usually ends in April. 48 games in such a short span sound dangerous for one of the toughest sport that is played on Ice. There is going to be a considerable amount of freak injuries, which will hurt more due to the fact that more games will be played over shorter stretches then in a regular year. That being said it’s hard to pick a favorite in any lockout season of a sport especially one that had an 8th seed run threw everybody in the playoffs. But in a regular year I would probably go with the Pittsburgh Penguins because Malkin played out of his mind last year and if Crosby can somehow stay healthy they should be a pretty heavy favorite with the New York Rangers but I have as much confidence in those picks as everybody has in the chances that “Kimye” well stay together despite the baby.

Zach Warren-

Let me start off by saying, I practically O-Ded on hockey this weekend. I am so excited for a new season.  That being said, I have to admit that the 48 game season scares me.  Teams are playing a lot of back-to-back games this year which takes a toll on a player's body very quickly. Hell, the Flyers are playing seven games in ten days! That's a lot of ice time and a lot of travel.  Expect injuries and tired players, just like we saw in a short NBA season.  As for predicting the Cup winners, it is hard to say in hockey.  Last year's playoffs just prove that like any sport, anything is possible.  Don't be surprised to see the usual suspects in the East compete this year: Pittsburgh, DC, Boston, NY Rangers, Philadelphia. I say this with a little bias, but I'll pick the Buffalo Sabres to be the dark horse of that conference, if they stay healthy. The West will be much of the same too, St. Louis, Vancouver, Chicago, LA... If I had to pick a team somewhat under the radar, I'd go with the Detroit Red Wings, who always seem to find ways to win.  Without going into in, my official start of the season prediction to win it all: The St. Louis Blues. Ask me again in a few weeks and that may change.

Spencer German-

A bunched up season in any sport is a bad idea.  It takes a toll on your body without a doubt.  We look at the NBA last year and I remember seeing a young Bulls team with championship hype fall apart completely due to injuries. Same with the Timberwolves.  Ricky Rubio's exciting rookie season was cut short by injury as well.  I just think it hard on the athletes more than anything, that being said though I know the players want to play games, get paid, and the owners want to start making some revenue.  You had to know a deal would get done and if there was still a few months left that the season is usually taking place, that it would happen.  Its going to be a fast paced season, with little time for mistakes and losing streaks for any team.  That being said I think the youth and aggressive play of the Penguins with Crosby back 100% and reigning MVP Malkin leading the way, that they will walk away with the title given they stay healthy.  Their youth works for them in that sense but injuries happen.

  4. Do you believe Manti Te’o’s story? Do you think that it will hurt his draft stock?

Ty Doyle-

I don’t know what to think about this story except that it made sense, to me at least, that this story would overshadow Lance Armstrong admitting he doped. Everybody including my mama knew that Armstrong doped but American’s aren’t very interested in cycling enough to care. But back to Te’o, at first there where to many wholes in his story to believe Te’o, but after more information it’s not inconceivable that he got “catfished” and lied about aspects of the “Relationship” because he was embarrassed that they met online. All facets of the story considered though, I can’t tell which story is worse. If he really is that gullible and believe such an obvious lie than will he last long in the NFL being the guy who will believe anything? I know no one wants to be labeled a liar but the NFL has had many crazy players but a naive one? He has to be a gold-digger's dream right? But who knows how he’ll handle actual women? Since you know, he doesn’t have much prior experience. His stock definitely dropped because he played like his girlfriend in the title game already and NFL draft stock is unreasonably fickle.

Zach Warren-

Unfortunately, I've never met the guy so I can't weigh in too much on his personal morality.  But I think I do believe him.  The fact that we have people admitting to a hoax helps his case a lot, and he seems like a fairly stand-up guy. I have a hard time believing that he'd have to make up a girlfriend if he didn't have one.  He is a soon-to-be rich football all-star after all.  Yes, his story has some holes, but nothing that I don't think he couldn't explain if given the chance. Now hopefully for him, this doesn't effect his stock too much.  If we are looking only at on-the-field traits, Manti Te'o is a must have for any team. Sadly for him, the NFL rarely only looks at on the field traits.  Some teams will have reserves about his gullibility. There is such thing as being too trusting.  Personally, I don't think it will effect his ranking too much unless some drastic development comes out in the story. He might drop a few spots, but I think he will still go first round.  I guess it depends on how well he does during his interviews.

Spencer German-

To be honest, I still don't know what to believe about the Manti Te'o story.  Just when you think you know everything something new comes out.  With the information we have now I think Te'o was actually Catfished by his friend Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, and did not know the hoax was going on and believed Lennay Kekua was a real person he was associating with.  I gathered that from a story on ESPN (http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8857057/friend-says-ronaiah-tuiasosopo-confessed-manti-teo-girlfriend-hoax) which explained a woman confirmed Tuiasosopo cried to her privately at church about being the one behind it and that a practical joke had become too big for him to handle.  Based on accusations from teammates of Te'o though, who claimed they could hardly call her his girlfriend and that they didn't really see her as such t him, I think he did kind of promote her as his girlfriend after the death came about and the media got involved to add to his tragic story that he was going through.  Then when he found out she wasn't dead after all or real through the last month or so I think it shook him and he was embarrassed to admit it and is still shying away from it if at all possible.  There are still a lot of questions though and doubts in my mind.  I don't buy his explanation for why he never "actually met up with her in Hawaii" that his parents would shut down the relationship if they knew she wasn't real...that seems too vague and loose ended for a 21 year old man.  And I still am confused about who he was talking to on the phone, and who his parents talked to on the phone.  And then there is the fact that if it was his girlfriend and he loved her as much as he made it seem and he knew she was dying  in the hospital of Leukemia why would he not once go visit her in person and talk to her, see how shes doing, tell her he loved her?  Like I don't know one girl who would be like ok ya just shoot me a few tweets while I'm on my death bed and we'll call it even.  No way.  I kinda get the whole "don't miss a game thing" but who wouldn't give up a game to go visit someone they loved who was dying...or even if not a game one practice during the week, you got 6 other days man.  He made it seem like his team and coaches were so supportive of him in his "time of need" so don't you think they would understand him missing a day for person reasons?  That is just too fishy to me man, and is why I think he pumped up the "girlfriend" aspect more than he needed.  Nonetheless I think it barely effects his draft stock.  Maybe if they find he was involved it gives off the idea that he only cares about his self publicity and image, which might not appeal to NFL teams but lets be real all professional teams really look for is talent.  If brains mattered for example people with 4's on the Wonderlic wouldn't get drafted 6th overall.  Overall all this might do is make Te'o come off as either a fool for having a fake online relationship that he thought was legit, or one of the biggest, scum bags of all time for setting it up and killing someone with cancer to promote himself.  Ironically though his morals don't show when he's running around tackling people on the football field.

Either way keep on Te'oing like its your job!
