Monday Spread Option Labor Day Edition

1. Last week we picked which Week 1 College Football game looked the most intriguing this week we pick which one ended up being the best to watch.

Spencer-
This one is easy for me; Had to be Florida State and Oklahoma State. College Game Day got their Week 1 location right. The game was back and forth all night. Just when you thought Florida State was going to run away with it Oklahoma State came storming back, and what an effort by their defense. Forced the reigning Heisman winner to throw two picks, were able to make some huge stops when they needed to. Just an overall great game that came down to the final minutes. The Beavers surprised some people I think and on the other end the Seminoles didn't look as unbeatable as they did a year ago.

Ty-
Florida State and Oklahoma State was definitely the best game to watch because it was one of the only ones that had a top ranked team in a close game. I did enjoy watching the Texas A&M vs South Carolina game because of how Kenny Hill and the new and improved Aggie defense just dismantled South Carolina. Either way none of these games were instant classics so hopefully we can get some better games this weekend.

2. The NFL Season officially kicks off on Thursday with a match-up between the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers. With week one getting started pick your preseason favorites to meet in Super Bowl 49 and a champion.

Ty-

This is a hard one to pick but it honestly looks like we might end up with a rematch of last years Super Bowl with how well the Seahawks and Broncos have looked. The Seahawks have looked like the best team but they probably have a lot more competition to be overthrown in the NFC with teams like the Packers and Saints out there. The Broncos are more vulnerable than the Seahawks but they have significantly less competition in the AFC. The Patriots will be there but after them i don't know if there is any team that I think can beat them. I do like the Chargers as well as the Bengals but who knows. My gut tells me there will be a repeat of last years Superbowl but for change sake I will say that it will be the Saints and Chargers in the Super Bowl.

Spencer-
I know we have a few season previews to finish before Thursday and we'll get those out, but I still have my picks. Before this weekend with all the suspensions and criminal mischief coming out of the San Fransisco defense I would of had the 49ers in there for the NFC. However, given the circumstances I can't honestly pick them with a some holes in that defense and playing in the toughest division in the NFL. So I'm going with the Seattle Seahawks. Yes I know how hard it is to repeat in this league but the Seahawks have a great chance to do it with the roster they have maintained from last year anchored around that dominant defense I wouldn't be surprised if Seattle pulled it off. In the AFC I do think the Denver Broncos got much better, particularly by addressing their defensive issues from 2013. Still I can't pick the exact same Super Bowl as a year ago so I'm going to have to pick the New England Patriots to advance for the AFC. New England obviously got better too, adding some key defensive pieces and some much needed offensive weapons for Tom Brady. So there you go Seahawks vs. Patriots for Super Bowl 49.

3. The MLB regular season is down to it's last month and the playoff race is heating up. What teams finish September as the ultimate division winners and what teams grab the wild card spots?

Spencer-
There are some races that, even though they're not official, I believe are already decided and others that will be fun to watch in September. We'll start with the easy ones. It's all but over in the AL East where the Baltimore Orioles holds a nine game lead over the New York Yankees. Barring a Red Sox 2012 type collapse I think they lock up their pennant in the next few weeks pretty easily. After losing their strongest starting pitcher a little over a week ago, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim surprised some people with a four game sweep of the Oakland A's who were jockeying for the AL West with them. Since trading Yoenis Cespedes Oakland's offense has been just bad, and the Angels are a more all around competitive team. I see them holding on to win the division. The Washington Nationals have a comfortable six game lead over the Atlanta Braves but they definitely can't let up. I see them holding on though and taking the NL East. Now for the hard ones...In the AL Central the Kansas City Royals hold just a half game lead over the Detroit Tigers who have looked awful as of late. Even further down the Cleveland Indians are just three and a hald games back as well so this is a tight race all around. I think Detroit finds their footing and is able to regain the lead in the division over the next month. In my season preview I picked the Royals to finish second and grab a wild card spot and I stand by that. So either way they are both in. The other AL Wild Card spot will go to the A's. To finish off the NL we look to the Central first where the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals are deadlocked for the division lead. The Brewers have certainly surprised people this year and I thought they'd eventually run out of steam but have stayed competitive. Still I think the Cardinals are built for not only the playoffs but tight playoff races in September and I don't see them faltering. They win the division and the Pittsburgh Pirates sneak in to steal the Wild Card spot from Milwaukee. Lastly in the NL West I think the Los Angeles Dodgers hang on to take the division but the San Fransisco Giants will have no problem grabbing a Wild Card spot.

Ty-
 In the AL:

Baltimore will win the East because they have pulled away from the competition. I got Kansas City winning the Central because they are playing pretty well and I think something special is happening there. The Angels will win the West after pulling 5 games ahead of the A's. Then the A's and the Tigers will get the wildcard spots. Those teams have been the best in the AL for most of the year.

In the NL

Washington is going to win the East. St. Louis will slightly edge out Milwaukee for the Central division. The Dodgers will win the West. Also San Francisco and Milwaukee will get the wildcard spots.

4. Nike re-upped Kevin Durant for a massive 10 year, potentially $300 million deal, keeping the superstar away from Under Armor. Was this the right move for both Nike and Durant?

Ty-
It made sense for both parties to agree to a new deal. Obviously Durant deserved the money and being able to earn that money and have a brand like Nike helps extends his bran a little more. Although I think that Durant could have definitely brought Under Armor to a new level in terms of basketball sneakers, Nike has a better standing with the basketball community. For Nike it makes sense for them to spend that much on Durant as he is slowly growing his brand and has always been extremely marketable. Also Nike needs a guy to be the face for the next few years. LeBron is still there but Durant is younger so there is reason to believe at some point in the next 8 years Durant will be the best player/face of the league. Nike could not pass that up.

Spencer-
This was absolutely the right move for both sides, but it has a bigger impact for Nike than it would have for Durant. If you're Nike you know you've always been associated with the biggest athletes in sports. Michael Jordan. LeBron James. Durant. So to lost one of those guys to a rival company like Under Armour would have looked bad for them and helped out their competition immensely. Durant obviously would have been fine either way because he is who is. People know him. People want to buy his brand. He would have been fine. Still I think Nike is more recognizable than Under Armour so it does benefit him to stay with them at least somewhat, plus he's making $300 million. That boy cashed in.

5. What We Learned:

Spencer- Boy Did I miss College Football

COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS BACK!!!!
I know Ty is going to talk about how it's wack and not as good because there are more mistakes but that's exactly what makes it more fun! The human error in college football makes it more exciting. Missed field goals give the other team a chance to stay in the game sometimes. In the NFL a game winning field goal is so common that in a way we've become immune to it. That unpredictability makes college football so fun.

Not only that but college football fans are the definition of diehard fans are. They are committed to there team because they had some kind of connection to that school, usually because they went there. That connection is a lot stronger than just living in Buffalo and being a Bills fan. The stadiums are bigger and they more impressive thing is they are selling those games out. 100,000 fans plus in some cases. The rivalries are also bigger. I'd take Michigan, Ohio State or Alabama Auburn any day over San Fransisco vs. Seattle in the NFL.

The one knock is that I do hate when the obviously more superior teams play some modified football squad in the first few weeks of the season. That obviously sucks and is just bad football and boring in general. However, when you get two good or evenly matched teams together it's so fun to watch.

Saturday's in the fall, you know where you can find me; On the coach flipping between College Football games. I love it. It's the sport that first got me into sports in the first place and it's always exciting and I'm glad to have it back.

Ty- College Football is like the Kix of Football

Like it's ok but you know what we really want. Yes I stole that line from Donald Glover but it gets across my point. This may contradict what Spencer said before but the NFL is way more exciting than College Football

I like college football because I generally like football but as a guy who's college does not have a college football team I don't really get as much interest in college football. I love college basketball because the college spirit drives it and I have been apart of that in person. I actually genuinely enjoy all sports but college football has a propensity to bore me at times mainly when the games seem to last forever. Also the lack of knowledge about the teams and the increased amount of blowouts don't help.

In the NFL the games are a lot more competitive and you usually know most of the good players on every team. I get extremely fired up watching my favorite team play in the NFL. I also can tell the difference in the talent level. I also like that the NFL airs it out a little more than college. In college there seems to be more athletes playing quarterback and teams look like Auburn and run it way more than they throw.

This isn't saying that college football can't be exciting. There are games that are awesome and are better than NFL games but to me that is few and far in between. Obviously most good games are contingent on ranked teams playing each other but that doesn't happen as often. Obviously with the NFL only having 32 teams it is more likely for top teams to play each other. The Bowl games are the most thing worth while for college .

The NFL regular season is just more exciting to me, which is why I can't wait until the regular season starts Thursday.
